STUDENT WORKER NEEDED

To assist with research on multiple projects addressing ecology of forest, rangeland, and desert landscapes.

Time period : September 2008 - May 2009.

Wage : $11 - $13 per hour, DOE.

Hours : 10 - 12 hours per week, flexible schedule.

Job Description: The student worker will support multiple research projects in the field of ecology, working closely with graduate students in the Great Basin Landscape Ecology Lab in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science, College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources. Projects address fire ecology; plant community responses to disturbance such as wildfire, prescribed fire, and mechanical fuel treatments; vegetation ecology of riparian ecosystems in the Great Basin, and long-term monitoring of vegetation change in desert springs environments. Job duties will include assisting with tree-ring research, data entry, processing of soil samples for laboratory analysis, processing of satellite imagery for remote sensing analysis, GIS analysis, and other tasks as needed. There may be opportunity for occasional fieldwork at study sites in the eastern Sierra, Great Basin and Mojave Desert. Training will be provided.

Qualifications: The successful applicant will be a UNR undergraduate student of any year or major, but who is interested in ecology and sustainable management of natural resources. The student must be an intelligent, academically motivated individual who is detail-oriented and capable of working independently.
