About the UNR Dietetic Internship Program

The University of Nevada, Reno Dietetic Internship Program (UNR IP) is a, post-baccalaureate supervised practice program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The UNR IP is administratively housed at University of Nevada, Reno within the Department of Agriculture, Nutrition & Veterinary Sciences (ANVS) in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources (CABNR).

 

Graduates of the UNR IP will successfully complete the supervised practice experiences necessary to acquire the ACEND 2012 Core Competencies for the RD . After successful completion of the UNR IP, the intern graduate will be eligible to sit for the Registered Dietitian (RD) credentialing examination. The graduates will be prepared to seek employment in the field with sound entry-level skills.

 

The UNR IP program has trained and continues to train highly competent intern graduates. Program outcomes data are available on request.

 

The UNR IP provides 1200 hours (two seven month (30 week) full-time (40 hours) of supervised practice experiences. Of the 1200 contact hours, 760 are devoted to clinical experience, 240 to food service and administration and the remaining 200 to community activities. The program has a clinical focus with a concentration area of Medical Nutrition Therapy.

Individual rotation schedules are set up for each intern by the internship director and site preceptors. These individual schedules are distributed to the intern on the start date of the internship rotation.

 

The UNR IP currently accepts 14 interns per year: 7 interns begin their rotation in January and 7 interns begin their rotation in July. When applying to the program, applicants may state a preference whether they wish to be placed in Reno or Las Vegas. Efforts are made to accommodate these requests but this may not always be possible.
