Mission & Goals
The main mission of the Department of Nutrition is to achieve excellence as a school wide university resource and to serve its students and community by contributing to new knowledge and skills at all levels of education (baccalaureate, graduate, professional and community). This mission will be achieved by a department that:
- provides a high quality academic program which will meet the nutritional science, clinical dietetics and application needs of the entire University of Nevada system;
- develops new courses and curricula;
- establishes a solid research base; and
- develops a service program where nutrition information can be assimilated.
The specific goals of the Department of Nutrition are:
- to develop a focused, coordinated interdisciplinary nutrition program as a major component of a school wide mission to achieve excellence in teaching, research and service;
- to establish a comprehensive curriculum which will address the general needs of students, integrate nutrition into other disciplines, establish minor and major core offerings, and develop graduate education opportunities;
- to address and improve the health of Nevada's citizens by well-planned, comprehensive nutrition outreach programs that address the nutrition needs of consumers/professionals at all levels of education;
- to establish a solid research base upon which to build teaching and to support competitive funding capabilities for further research; and
- to build a future for nutrition as an identified discipline within the University and Community College System of Nevada.
Objectives
- to provide students with a strong science background that will support research skill development
- provide students with a curriculum that is appropriate for entrance into professional schools such as medicine
- provide students with a curriculum that is appropriate for pursuing graduate research and education in the nutrition field
- to provide students with a strong laboratory science background and the opportunity to develop their research skills
