Friends of the Equestrian Team
The University Of Nevada, Reno Intercollegiate Horse Show Team welcomes you to
become involved in the wonderful world of horses. You can help to support our
students by becoming a Friend of the Equestrian Team.
Only
with your generous support can the University of Nevada, Reno Intercollegiate
Horse Show Team continue to compete and promote equestrian events. The
Intercollegiate Horse Show Team gives students the opportunity to include these
beautiful creatures in their lives. Competing as a club sport, the team relies
solely on generous donations for their activities.
The Reality
Our
students have an earnest desire to work with horses. And their passion is often
met with financial hardship. Students frequently face great difficulty keeping
up with regular student expenses and responsibilities, let alone the cost of
caring for a horse. There is
something special gained by working with and around horses. A sense of
responsibility for others and a better understanding of the world we live in.
College students gain this responsibility and understanding to be better
equipped for their future endeavors. The
Intercollegiate Horse Show Team gives students the chance to develop these
qualities and so many more. Members learn teamwork, sportsmanship, skill
development as well as an appreciation for the outdoors. Without
the generous help of others, our students could miss out on valuable
opportunities.
Healthy
Competition
The
Intercollegiate Horse Show Team competes in 10 to 12 horse shows throughout the
year. These competitions begin in the fall semester and run through the spring
when regional, zone and national competitions are held.
To
promote valuable teamwork, healthy competition and the University of Nevada,
Reno, the team competes in shows at California schools such as Readly, Davis,
Fresno and Cal Poly, SLO. Within this region riders compete as both individuals
and a team. Points
are accumulated over the season and determine eligibility for regional, zone and
national finals. Students
ride horses and tack furnished by host colleges. Riders are placed with horses
by drawing lots and students are not allowed any prior practice or warm-up
before entering the arena. The theory is to equalize the competition and better
test the horsemanship of the contestants. Riders
are judged on their performance, ability to ride an unfamiliar horse, test of
control and obedience, maintenance of correct riding position and overall
presentation of style and horsemanship. Team
members can compete in both Western and English riding-style classes. Classes
range from beginning to open divisions for different riding levels.
How to Help
The
benefits are endless. By donating to this team you will not only help students
to be a part of the wonderful world of horses, you will also become a valued
member of the Friends of the Equestrian Team. Friends will be sent newsletters
throughout the year to keep you updated on the team’s standings, receive a
lapel pin and invitations to all of the team’s upcoming events. With
your donation, students can gain not only from experience but from being part of
a mutually beneficial relationship. By supporting students, the team supports
its community. For donations and information, please contact: Linda Vogedes

The
Intercollegiate Horse Show Team is governed by the Intercollegiate
Horse Show Association (IHSA), the organization for all intercollegiate
horse shows. The IHSA was developed on the premise that any college student
should be able to participate in horse shows without having to deal with the
expense of owning and caring for their own horse. The IHSA allows competition
between students from universities all over the United States.
